Tasting: The second wine of Smith Haut Lafitte demonstrates remarkable pedigree with aromatic complexity of ripe blackberries, dark plums, and subtle smoke. The palate offers impressive depth with notes of black cherries, warm earth, and toasted spice, supported by fine-grained tannins. Both Antonio Galloni and Neal Martin note its exceptional balance and energy for a second wine, praising its silky texture and length.
Pairing: The wine's elegance and structure pair beautifully with Limousin Veal accompanied by wild Girolles mushrooms. For poultry, choose Poulet Landes with Autumn Truffle. The wine's refined character complements Carabineros prawns or Ōra King Salmon. For cheese, serve with aged Comté from Fort Saint Antoine or a perfectly ripened Camembert de Normandie.
Producer: Le Petit Haut Lafitte represents the second wine of the prestigious Château Smith Haut Lafitte, owned by Florence and Daniel Cathiard since 1990. The former Olympic skiers have transformed this ancient estate into one of Bordeaux's most innovative producers. Their commitment to sustainability includes using horse-drawn ploughs and maintaining their own cooperage. The second wine benefits from the same meticulous attention to detail as the grand vin, with plots specifically dedicated to its production.
Vintage: 2015 stands as an exceptional year in Bordeaux, particularly for Pessac-Léognan. A warm, dry summer followed by perfect conditions during harvest allowed for optimal ripening. The vintage produced wines of remarkable concentration and freshness, with the gravelly soils of Pessac-Léognan providing excellent drainage during brief September rains. This vintage shows particular finesse and aging potential.
