Tasting: A classic village-level Gevrey showing admirable depth and structure. The nose presents wild red berries, dark cherries, and subtle earth notes, with hints of oriental spice and violet. The palate delivers well-defined fruit, precise tannins, and characteristic Gevrey power, while maintaining elegance. Neal Martin notes its appealing freshness and energy, while Allen Meadows highlights its typical Gevrey structure and depth.
Pairing: This sophisticated village wine pairs beautifully with seared Sashi Beef, roasted Poulet Landes with wild mushrooms, or Toulouse sausages with herbs. For autumn dining, serve alongside wild Ceps or Chanterelles. The wine's structure complements 18-month Fort Saint Antoine Comté or seasonal Vacherin Mont d'Or, while black truffle risotto creates an excellent winter pairing.
Producer: Domaine Roux Père et Fils, established in 1885, has evolved from a small family operation to a significant presence in Burgundy. Operating from Saint-Aubin, they maintain holdings across the Côte d'Or, including carefully selected parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin. Under the current generation's leadership, they combine modern winemaking precision with traditional Burgundian practices, focusing on expressing each terroir's unique characteristics.
Vintage: 2021 presented significant challenges in Burgundy, with April frost reducing yields dramatically. A cool, wet summer required careful vineyard management, but September brought favorable conditions for harvest. The resulting wines show remarkable freshness and precision, with moderate alcohol levels and excellent aromatic complexity, though quantities are limited.
