HERMITAGE LA CHAPELLE 2006 - PAUL JABOULET & ÂINE
Hermitage La Chapelle 2006 - Paul Jaboulet Aîné
Region: Hermitage, Northern Rhône, France
Grape: Syrah
Rating: 95 points (Wine Advocate), 94 points (Wine Spectator)
When to drink: 2016-2036 (Robert Parker)
Tasting: A profound expression of Hermitage displaying remarkable complexity and refinement. The nose reveals black fruits, smoked meat, leather, and crushed stones, with subtle notes of violet and black olive. The palate shows impressive concentration with perfectly integrated tannins, offering layers of dark fruit, spice, and mineral notes.
Pairing: The wine's power and complexity complement A5 Japanese Wagyu or Sashi Beef. For traditional matches, serve with Lumina Lamb or slow-cooked Iberico Pork Cheeks. The wine's structure pairs exceptionally with aged Fort Saint Antoine Comté or Truffle Pecorino. Wild Ceps and Morels enhance the wine's earthy characteristics.
Producer: Paul Jaboulet Aîné stands as one of the Rhône's most historic houses, with La Chapelle representing their flagship wine since 1919. The wine takes its name from the small chapel of Saint-Christophe that sits atop Hermitage hill, a landmark visible throughout the region. This particular vintage was produced under the Frey family's ownership, marking a period of significant investment and renewed focus on quality, with Caroline Frey directing the winemaking.
Vintage: 2006 presented a balanced growing season in the Northern Rhône. A warm, dry summer was followed by ideal September conditions, allowing for optimal ripening. The vintage produced wines of classical proportion and structure, with good concentration and fresh acidity, typical of traditional Hermitage style.
