Region: Santa Cruz Mountains, California, USA

Rating: 98 points (Wine Advocate), 97 points (Vinous)
When to drink: 2022-2045 (Robert Parker)
Tasting: A profound expression of California's finest terroir. The nose presents cassis, blackberries, and graphite, with complex notes of cedar, tobacco, and crushed rock. The palate shows remarkable precision and energy, with perfectly integrated tannins and exceptional length.
Pairing: This distinguished wine pairs exceptionally with A5 Japanese Wagyu, chargrilled Sashi Beef, or slow-roasted Cinco Jotas Presa. The wine's complexity enhances dishes featuring wild Ceps or Trompettes. For cheese, serve with aged Fort Saint Antoine Comté or Truffle Pecorino.
Producer: Ridge Vineyards' Monte Bello estate, with its limestone-rich soils at elevations between 1,300 and 2,700 feet, stands as an American First Growth. First planted in 1885, the vineyard's modern era began in 1969 when Paul Draper joined as winemaker. The estate practices sustainable farming and minimal-intervention winemaking, including natural yeast fermentation and minimal sulfur use. Monte Bello consistently demonstrates that California can produce wines of exceptional refinement and aging potential to rival the finest wines of Europe.
Vintage: 2009 proved exceptional in the Santa Cruz Mountains. A moderate growing season with cool nights allowed for extended hang time and perfect phenolic ripeness. The vintage shows remarkable balance between power and elegance, with excellent concentration and fresh acidity, promising exceptional longevity.
