Tasting: A profound Super Tuscan displaying remarkable finesse and power. The nose offers complex layers of dark cherries, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco, and forest floor, with hints of espresso and spice. The palate shows exceptional structure with fine-grained tannins, delivering impressive depth and energy. Monica Larner notes its outstanding balance and length, while Galloni emphasises its classical proportion and aging potential.
Pairing: This noble Tuscan wine pairs exceptionally with Miguel Vergara beef, slow-cooked Iberico Pork Cheeks, or Poulet de Bresse with wild mushrooms. The wine's structure complements dishes featuring wild Ceps or autumn Girolles. For cheese pairings, serve with aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Sardo. Black truffle risotto creates an outstanding winter combination.
Producer: The 2017 vintage marks the 40th release of I Sodi di San Niccolò under Paolo Panerai's ownership. Since 1979, Castellare di Castellina has combined exceptional winemaking with environmental protection, practicing chemical-free viticulture and championing biodiversity. Each vintage label features a different endangered Tuscan bird - the 2017 showcases the Red-backed Shrike - as part of their partnership with the Italian League for Bird Protection. Their flagship wine comes from the steep, southwest-facing San Niccolò vineyard, where old vines produce one of Tuscany's most distinguished wines.
Vintage: 2017 was marked by intense heat and drought in Tuscany. While challenging, the old vines and optimal exposure of the San Niccolò vineyard, combined with careful canopy management, allowed the grapes to achieve full ripeness while maintaining freshness. The result is a wine of concentration and power, supported by classical structure and remarkable balance.
