Tasting: Powerful and aristocratic, showing intense aromas of cassis, blackberry and spiced plum layered with cedar, dark chocolate and oriental spices. The palate presents remarkable concentration with refined tannins, revealing notes of black fruits, tobacco leaf, and an exotic hint of incense, leading to a long, complex finish with Mouton's characteristic opulence.
Pairing: Ideal with rich game dishes, venison with wild mushrooms, or aged beef. Decant for 2-3 hours before serving to allow the full array of aromas to develop.
Producer: Château Mouton Rothschild achieved First Growth status in 1973, the only change to the 1855 classification. The estate has been in the Rothschild family since 1853, with Philippine de Rothschild bringing significant innovations including the first gravity-flow vat room in the Médoc. The 84-hectare vineyard sits on deep gravel soils atop limestone bedrock, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Each vintage features a unique label designed by renowned artists, making each bottle a true collector's item.
Vintage: 2008 was marked by a cool, damp spring and early summer, but was saved by a glorious Indian summer from mid-September through October. This extended period of warm, dry weather allowed perfect ripening conditions. The resulting wine shows excellent concentration and freshness, typical of great "cool" Bordeaux vintages.
