Tasting: A beautifully refined expression of Gevrey-Chambertin terroir displaying remarkable finesse. The nose reveals delicate red berries, wild strawberries, and forest floor, with subtle hints of dried rose petals and sweet spice. The palate shows impressive depth and silky texture, offering layers of red cherries, wild raspberries, and earthy minerality, supported by fine, elegant tannins.
Pairing: The wine's elegance and subtle power pairs beautifully with Poulet de Bresse served with wild Morels or Girolles. For red meat, choose Limousin Veal with Autumn Truffle. Its refined character works harmoniously with Guinea Fowl or traditional Boudin Blanc. For cheese, serve with a perfectly ripened Vacherin Mont d'Or or aged Comté from Fort Saint Antoine.
Producer: Domaine Joseph Roty, now under the stewardship of the 11th generation of the family, remains one of Burgundy's most respected producers. Their winemaking philosophy is deeply traditional, with some of the oldest vines in Burgundy. The Fontenys vineyard, situated on the northern side of Gevrey-Chambertin, benefits from perfect exposure and iron-rich soils. The family is known for their late harvesting and extended aging in oak, producing wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Their steadfast dedication to traditional methods, including the use of whole clusters and minimal intervention, results in wines that perfectly express their terroir.
Vintage: 2013 was a challenging year in Burgundy that rewarded careful vineyard management. A cool, wet spring led to late flowering, followed by a summer marked by hail in some areas. However, a warm September helped rescue the vintage. The best producers, like Roty, achieved impressive results through strict selection and their deep understanding of their terroir. The wines show classic Burgundian elegance with good acidity and refined structure.
