Tasting: A magnificent expression of noble rot with extraordinary complexity and precision. The nose unfolds with layers of honeyed apricot, orange marmalade, and exotic saffron, complemented by delicate notes of vanilla bean and white flowers. The palate presents perfect balance between opulent sweetness and vibrant acidity, showing concentrated flavours of candied citrus, tropical fruit, and sweet spice, with remarkable length and depth.
Pairing: This noble Sauternes pairs sublimely with Sturia Oscietra Caviar served on blinis. For a classic pairing, serve with seared Foie Gras. The wine's complexity beautifully complements both Vacherin Mont d'Or and aged Comté from Fort Saint Antoine. For dessert pairings, White Truffle ice cream or a tart featuring Autumn Truffle provide intriguing combinations that match the wine's sophistication.
Producer: Château d'Yquem stands alone at the summit of Bordeaux's sweet wine classification as the only Premier Cru Supérieur. The estate's exceptional 113-hectare vineyard sits on the highest hill in Sauternes, creating perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea (noble rot). Each vine produces only one glass of wine, with pickers passing through the vineyard up to 13 times to select only perfectly botrytised grapes. Under LVMH's ownership since 1999, the château maintains its legendary dedication to perfection, occasionally declining to produce a vintage if conditions do not meet their exacting standards.
Vintage: 2006 represents a classic year for Sauternes, characterised by excellent botrytis development. A dry, warm summer was followed by ideal autumn conditions with morning mists and warm afternoons - perfect for noble rot formation. September rains were followed by cool, dry conditions during harvest, allowing for excellent concentration. The resulting wines show remarkable purity and freshness alongside their natural richness.
