CHÂTEAU ANGELUS - SAINT-ÉMILION GRAND CRU 2014
Château Angélus - Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé A 2014
Region: Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France
Grape: Merlot 50%, Cabernet Franc 50%
Rating: 95/100 Wine Spectator, 93+/100 Robert Parker, 96 Vinous, 97/100 Wine Enthusiast, 96/100 James Suckling
When to drink: 2024-2040 (Wine Advocate)
Tasting: Complex and profound, showing intense aromas of ripe black cherries, plums and blackberries, interwoven with notes of violets, dark chocolate and subtle spice. The palate reveals remarkable depth with velvet-textured tannins, offering layers of dark fruits, truffle, and limestone minerality, leading to an impressively long, refined finish.
Pairing: Exceptional with Miguel Vergara beef or a dish of Iberico Secreto with Black Truffle. Also pairs beautifully with Poulet de Bresse served with morels or ceps. For cheese, try with aged Parmigiano Reggiano or Fort Saint Antoine Comté. Decant for 2-3 hours before serving.
Producer: Château Angélus, elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé A status in 2012, has been owned by the de Boüard family since 1782. The estate's exceptional 27-hectare vineyard, situated on a south-facing slope near the historic town of Saint-Émilion, combines the warm gravel soils of the foot slopes with the limestone-clay of the plateau. Their high proportion of Cabernet Franc, rare for the appellation, contributes to the wine's distinctive character and aging potential.
Vintage: 2014 presented early challenges with a cool, damp summer, but was saved by a glorious Indian summer through September and October. These ideal late-season conditions particularly benefited the Cabernet Franc, allowing for perfect ripeness while maintaining freshness and aromatic complexity. The result is a classic Angélus showing precision and energy.
