Tasting: This exceptional single-vineyard Chardonnay displays luminous golden hues with enticing aromas of ripe pear, Meyer lemon and toasted brioche. On the palate, layers of orchard fruit unfold alongside notes of warm spice, honeycomb and fresh cream, all beautifully framed by subtle oak. The cool-climate vineyard shines through in its remarkable tension – opulent fruit balanced by vibrant acidity and a distinctive mineral undercurrent. The long, nuanced finish reveals hints of flint, white flowers and sea salt, showcasing both power and elegance.
Pairing: An exquisite match for Ōra King Salmon with a brown butter sauce, allowing the wine's richness to complement the fish's luxurious texture. Also superb with Poulet Landes roasted with lemon and herbs, or Tristan da Cunha Lobster prepared simply to showcase its sweet delicacy. For cheese, try with aged Comté from Fort Saint Antoine, where the wine's complexity enhances the cheese's nutty depth.
Producer: Patz & Hall stands as one of California's most respected producers of single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Founded in 1988, the winery has built enduring relationships with the finest growers in Sonoma and Napa. Their partnership with the Dutton family – pioneering growers whose viticultural roots in Russian River Valley date back to the 1880s – represents California winemaking at its most collaborative and site-specific. The coveted Dutton Ranch bottling, limited to just 120 barrels annually, showcases fruit from some of the region's most exceptional cool-climate vineyard blocks.
Vintage: 2019 is celebrated as a near-perfect vintage in Sonoma County. A wet winter replenished groundwater supplies, followed by a mild, steady growing season without extreme heat spikes. The extended hang time allowed for ideal phenolic development while preserving crucial acidity. The resulting wines display exceptional concentration and aromatic complexity alongside remarkable freshness and structure – characteristics that position 2019 as one of the finest California vintages of the decade.
