Tasting: This exquisite dry white from the legendary Sauternes estate presents with brilliant pale gold reflections and a captivating aromatic profile of white peach, acacia honey and fresh citrus zest. The palate delivers remarkable precision with layers of orchard fruit, subtle spice and a distinctive mineral core. Unlike Climens' famed sweet wines, Petite Lily showcases Semillon's versatility through its vibrant acidity, textural elegance and remarkable tension. The limestone-clay terroir expresses itself through a sophisticated saline finish with notes of white flowers, fresh herbs and wet stone lingering beautifully.
Pairing: A sublime match for Chilean Sea Bass with a light herb butter, where the wine's textural richness complements the fish's delicate flesh. Equally impressive alongside Gambero Rosso in a simple lemon preparation or Poulet de Bresse with a light cream sauce. For cheese, pair with young Comté from Fort Saint Antoine or Camembert de Normandie, allowing the wine's complexity to enhance the subtle dairy notes.
Producer: Château Climens, often called the "Lord of Barsac," has been renowned for exceptional sweet wines since 1547. Under Bérénice Lurton's leadership since 1992, this Premier Cru Classé estate has embraced biodynamic viticulture, becoming certified in 2014. While celebrated for noble-rot affected Sauternes, their dry Petite Lily represents a relatively new expression of their exceptional terroir. Created with the same meticulous approach as their sweet wines, it offers a different lens through which to experience the estate's remarkable Semillon from 30-year-old vines grown on their distinctive limestone-dominant soils.
Vintage: 2022 delivered exceptional conditions for dry white wines in Bordeaux. Following a warm, dry summer, cooling nights in late August and September preserved crucial acidity while allowing perfect phenolic ripeness. The moderate yields resulted in concentrated fruit with remarkable balance and energy. For Petite Lily, the vintage yielded a wine of unusual precision and mineral definition, showcasing the finesse and elegance that has made this relatively new project from Climens so exciting to Bordeaux enthusiasts.
