Tasting: An exemplary Vermentino that captures the essence of Sardinian terroir. The nose is expressive with notes of Mediterranean herbs, citrus blossom, and ripe yellow peach, complemented by subtle hints of maritime salinity. The palate shows remarkable depth with layers of white pear, Meyer lemon, and crushed herbs, underpinned by a distinctive mineral core. The texture is silky yet fresh, with a long, saline finish that speaks eloquently of its island origins.
Pairing: This refined Vermentino pairs beautifully with Ōra King Salmon, its textural qualities complementing the fish's rich character. Exceptional with Tristan da Cunha Lobster, where the wine's mineral notes enhance the sweetness of the shellfish.
Producer: Cantina Mesa, founded by Gavino Sanna in 2004, has rapidly established itself as one of Sardinia's most exciting producers. The name 'Mesa' means table in both Sardinian and Spanish, reflecting the winery's belief that wine should bring people together. The 'Giunco' (meaning rush plant) comes from vineyards near the coastal town of Sant'Anna Arresi, where the constant sea breezes and mineral-rich soils create perfect conditions for characterful Vermentino.
Vintage: 2022 was an excellent vintage in Sardinia, characterised by a mild spring and a warm summer moderated by cooling maritime influences. Well-timed rainfall and perfect harvest conditions produced Vermentino with exceptional aromatic intensity and balanced acidity.
