Tasting: A sophisticated expression of modern Rioja, presenting layers of dark cherry, blackberry and dried fig, complemented by notes of sweet spice, cedar and vanilla from careful oak ageing. The palate shows remarkable depth with polished tannins, revealing hints of tobacco, dark chocolate and a subtle minerality that speaks of its terroir. The finish is long and harmonious, with an elegant balance of fruit and oak.
Pairing: This refined Rioja pairs magnificently with Cinco Jotas Presa, allowing the wine's structure to complement the marbled richness of this premium Iberico cut. Also excellent with Lumina Lamb, where the wine's fruit intensity matches the meat's delicate flavour profile. For cheese, try with aged Fort Saint Antoine Comté, or serve alongside wild Ceps and Black Truffle for an outstanding autumn combination.
Producer: Fernando Remírez de Ganuza revolutionised Rioja winemaking when he established his bodega in 1989. His innovative approach includes using only the 'shoulders' of grape bunches for his premium wines, selecting the ripest berries that receive the most sun. This meticulous attention to detail extends throughout the winemaking process, from hand-sorting tables to gravity-flow facilities, ensuring minimal intervention and maximum quality.
Vintage: 2016 was an exceptional year in Rioja, characterised by a warm, dry summer followed by cooling rains in September that allowed for perfect phenolic ripening. These conditions produced wines of remarkable concentration and freshness, with excellent ageing potential.
