Tasting: A remarkable expression of Northern Rhône Syrah, this Saint Joseph opens with intense aromas of blackberry, crushed violets and cracked black pepper. The palate reveals exceptional balance between concentrated dark fruits, smoky bacon fat and graphite minerality. Fine-grained tannins provide elegant structure while bright acidity brings freshness and vitality. Notes of olive tapenade, wild herbs and cool granite emerge on the complex, lingering finish, showcasing both power and finesse.
Pairing: This sophisticated Syrah reaches its full expression alongside Lumina Lamb rack, where the wine's peppery notes complement the meat's delicate sweetness. Also exceptional with Iberico Pork Cheeks (Carrillera) slow-braised with herbs, or alongside wild Ceps sautéed with garlic and thyme. For cheese, try with aged Fort Saint Antoine Comté for a classic regional pairing.
Producer: Château St Cosme stands as the Northern Rhône's most historic estate, with winemaking activity dating back to 1416 and Gallo-Roman fermentation tanks still visible on the property. Under Louis Barruol's guidance – the 14th generation of his family to steward these lands – St Cosme has become a benchmark producer, renowned for single-vineyard expressions that capture the essence of their terroir. Barruol's non-interventionist approach in the cellar allows the distinctive granite soils of this Saint Joseph vineyard to speak with clarity and precision.
Vintage: 2019 proved exceptional in the Northern Rhône, with a hot, dry summer relieved by timely rainfall in late August. These perfect conditions allowed for slow, even ripening while preserving crucial acidity. The resulting wines offer remarkable concentration and aromatic complexity with excellent ageing potential, considered by many critics to be among the finest vintages of the decade.
