DRIED SHALLOTS
Dried shallots are a must-have in the kitchen! You can use them to delicately enhance all your vegetable-based preparations, in marinades, in your sauces, or even in gratins. Chopped shallots are also perfect for starting an aromatic base in a skillet with butter or oil.
Shallots release a delicate and sweet flavour that is less pungent than onions, making them ideal for bringing aromatic sweetness without overpowering other ingredients. Shallots develop a gentle caramelisation when cooked, adding a rich and slightly sweet dimension to dishes. Their fragrant aroma is often described as a subtle combination of onion and garlic, creating a balanced and harmonious flavour.
Shallots originally come from the Middle East. They have been cultivated since time immemorial by the Egyptians, and they were sacred to Persians. In the 12th century, the Crusaders brought shallots to France. Ever since, they have grown in Brittany and Anjou, as well as in the North of France and the Drôme region. In Ancient times, shallots were found in many Greek and Roman dishes and were considered to have aphrodisiac properties. Shallots are not only delicious but are also very healthy and rich in minerals and vitamins.
